Background
University College London created its first chair of architecture in 1841, making The Bartlett the first architecture and built environment school established in the UK. The school is named after the original benefactor, Sir Herbert Bartlett. It is home to The Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, one of the most prestigious and competitive architecture and urban planning schools in the world, ranking 2nd in the world in both the 2015 and 2016 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Education
The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment is the UK's largest and leading multidisciplinary faculty of the built environment, covering architecture, planning, construction and project management, development planning and environmental design as well as many other specialist fields. It is particularly well known for its architecture and planning schools following the leadership of Sir Peter Cook and Sir Peter Hall respectively in the 1990s. The faculty undertakes research in the built environment, and is known for developing the space syntax theory.

In 2011 the university appointed Frédéric Migayrou as the new Bartlett Professor of Architecture. Current professors also include Iain Borden (Professor of Architecture & Urban Culture), Mario Carpo (Reyner Banham Professor of Architectural History and Theory), Nat Chard (Professor of Experimental Architecture), Adrian Forty (Professor of Architectural History), Murray Fraser (Architecture & Global Culture), Stephen Gage (Professor of Architecture & Innovative Technology), Christine Hawley (Professor of Architectural Studies), Jonathan Hill (Professor of Architecture & Visual Theory), CJ Lim (Professor of Architecture & Urbanism) and Jane Rendell (Professor of Architecture & Art). The Director of the School of Architecture is Bob Sheil, Professor of Architecture and Design through Production.
The Bartlett School of Architecture courses are validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The school has been rated by the Architects' Journal as the best architecture school in the UK for the past 11 years, and consistently ranks in the top in the Guardian university league tables for architecture.

School of Planning
In 2011 Fulong Wu was appointed as Bartlett Professor of Planning. There have been a succession of eminent Bartlett Professors of Planning at UCL including Stanley Adshead, Sir Patrick Abercrombie, Lord William Holford, Lord Richard Llewelyn-Davies, Gerald Smart, Sir Peter Hall and Michael Batty, all of whom have been associated with planning and cities in Britain and elsewhere. Sir Patrick Geddes, the father of town planning, studied physiology at the College in the late 1870s.
Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis
The Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) was set up in 1995 by the first Director Michael Batty who is now the Chair. The current Director is Andy Hudson-Smith. The Centre specialises in the application of new technologies to cities and regions and its current focus is on smart cities. It has introduced a new masters program in smart cities.
Development Planning Unit (DPU)
Professor Julio D. Davila is the current Director of The Bartlett's Development Planning Unit (DPU) having been appointed in August 2012. The DPU focuses on the importance of sustainable and socially just planning and policy in development, particularly in the global south. It originally began as the Department of Tropical Architecture at the Architectural Association in 1954, and moved to UCL in 1971. The DPU's first Director was Professor Otto Königsberger. Subsequent directors are: Professor Colin Rosser, Professor Nigel Harris, Professor Patrick Wakely, Babar Mumtaz and Caren Levy.
School of Construction & Project Management
Dr. D'Maris Coffman is currently Director of the School of Construction & Project Management. Current school professors are Professor Peter Morris (Construction and Project Management), Professor Andrew Davies (Management of Projects), Professor Andrew Edkins (Management of Complex Projects), Professor Peter Hansford (Chair of Construction and Infrastructure Policy), Professor Jim Meikle (Economics of the Construction Sector) and Professor Hedley Smyth (Project Enterprises).
Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources
The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER), directed by Professor Tadj Oreszczyn, sits within the Bartlett Faculty and consists of:
- the UCL Energy Institute, led by Professor Bob Lowe, which researches climate change and energy security primarily from a public policy perspective;
- the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources, led by Professor Paul Ekins, which researches the sustainable use of natural resources;
- the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, led by Professor Michael Davies, which researches the interactions between the built environment and health, human wellbeing, energy use and climate change; and
- the UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage, led by Professor May Cassar, which researches the conservation of cultural heritage.
BSEER is also home to a number of academic centres, including EPSRC-funded Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT), including:
- the London-Loughborough (LoLo) EPSRC CDT in Energy Demand;
- the EPSRC CDT in Science and Engineering in Arts, Heritage and Archaeology (SEAHA);
- the wholeSEM (Whole Systems Energy Modelling) Consortium
- the RCUK Centre for Energy Epidemiology; and
- the coordinator of the RCUK End Use Energy Demand Centres.

UCL Institute for Digital Innovation in the Built Environment
The UCL Institute for Digital Innovation in the Built Environment, launched in 2016, uses digital advances to shape the way the built environment is created, sustained, managed and experienced. The Institute's work draws together expertise in engineering and computer science with social and behavioural science insight. Professor Tim Broyd is the Institute Director.
