History

Founded in 1955 as the School of Business Administration, the School was housed in the McKinley Building. In 1979, Robert Kogod, a major real estate developer and president of the Charles E. Smith Companies, made a major donation to rename the school the Robert P. and Arlene R. Kogod College of Business Administration. In 1999, the school moved into its current location, formerly the John Sherman Meyer Building, vacated by the Washington College of Law. The building received a major renovation, and the school changed its name to the Kogod School of Business. In 2009, the school opened a 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) expansion. This addition houses a Financial Services and Information Technology Lab, Behavioral Research Lab, a center for career development, seven additional classrooms, three breakout rooms, and a student lounge.

Professional Development and Career Resources

Kogod Center for Career Development

Kogod's Center for Career Development (KCCD) offers students one-on-one guidance on relationship building, transitioning to new business careers, crafting their resumes, and searching for jobs. Students can make appointments with staff members, or meet with a peer consultant.

The KCCD also sponsors industry days, which include a panel of experts in a business area, as well as networking with companies in a career fair setting.

Kogod Center for Business Communications

Kogod's Center for Business Communications was founded to help students develop strong writing, public speaking and presentation skills.

KCBC counselors provide individualized support on a by-appointment basis. Typical sessions include help with written assignments, practicing elevator pitches and interview skills, organizing team assignments, and more.

The Center's Audience Dog Program is a particularly distinctive offering. Students practice class presentations in front of locally-sourced dogs, giving them the chance to rehearse in front of a non-judgmental, friendly audience. The program was founded to help ease students' public speaking anxiety and develop confidence in their presentation skills.

K-LAB

Kogod Leadership and Applied Business (K-LAB) offers programs and activities designed to hone students' leadership and management skills. K-LAB supports a wide range of clubs for undergraduate and graduate students, such as the graduate business association (GBA), 1955 Club, the Entrepreneur's Club, Kogod Women in Business, and Net Impact.

K-LAB also sponsors the business honor society Beta Gamma Sigma, as well as Kogod's annual case competition. The lab's L.E.AD. (Leadership Education and Development) program provides additional opportunities for service learning, mentorship and networking.

Notable undergraduate programs include:

  • Road scholars: an alternative spring break study tour providing undergraduate students with hands-on business opportunities
  • The Washington Initiative: two-credit courses providing the opportunity to serve as a consultant for a local non-profit organization.
